Nicolai Majland — Jazz Pianist & Composer
Melody as the guiding star.
A personal voice in jazz
For Danish jazz pianist and composer Nicolai Majland, melody is at the heart of everything.
Rooted in the bebop tradition and shaped by the lyrical sensibility of Nordic jazz, his music brings together melodic clarity, harmonic richness and a deeply personal sense of expression.
There is often a touch of melancholy and introspection in Majland’s compositions — a reflective, sometimes wistful quality that gives the music both intimacy and emotional depth. Yet beneath the Nordic atmosphere lies a strong connection to the rhythmic vitality and improvisational freedom of American jazz.
Whether through carefully crafted compositions or spontaneous improvisation, melody remains the guiding star — the thread that connects emotion, harmony and musical storytelling.
A life with the piano
With more than two decades of professional experience, Nicolai Majland has built a versatile career as a pianist, composer, musical director and educator.
His musical influences span a wide landscape — from the harmonic imagination of Bill Evans and the virtuosity of Oscar Peterson to the expressive freedom of Keith Jarrett, the Nordic lyricism of Lars Jansson and the melodic brilliance of Michel Petrucciani.
The romantic piano tradition, particularly the music of Frédéric Chopin, has also left a lasting impression on his musical language.
Together, these influences have helped shape a personal approach to jazz piano in which melody, expression and improvisation are inseparable.

The Nicolai Majland Trio
At the centre of Majland’s artistic work is the Nicolai Majland Trio, featuring bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk and drummer Morten Lund.
The trio explores Majland’s original compositions through a musical dialogue built on interplay, spontaneity and a shared sense of melodic direction.
The music moves naturally between lyrical reflection, melancholy and the rhythmic energy of the jazz tradition, always allowing the melody to lead the way.

Beyond the stage
Alongside his work as a recording artist and performer, Nicolai Majland has enjoyed an extensive career in musical theatre, including work as a pianist and musical director.
He is also a dedicated piano educator, sharing his experience and passion for music with the next generation of musicians.
Across his work as a composer, performer and teacher, one principle remains constant: music begins with the melody.
